The objective of the The Art of Reading program is to inspire creative inquiry by developing visual literacy skills and experiencing a variety of art media.

The Story

The monthly picture book selection is used as an art form for children to look at and learn how the illustrator/artist has told a story with pictures.  Children are encouraged to read along and interact with the teacher.  Picture books in the past have been:

Oh My Baby Little OneGathering BookRaindrops

The children will be given the opportunity to work collaboratively with their parent, caregiver or SPLAT Studio teacher on a teacher directed art activity.  Art activities will be inspired by the illustrator's style, media and the theme of the picture book.

As An Option

Now offering parents and caregivers the option to drop their children off for the one hour of art instruction.  During each class, there are two instructors that will provide your child with a safe environment that encourages child centered creativity.  Just let us know when signing up if you plan to attend with your child or not.

On The Road

During the summer of 2009, Mrs. Meghan and Mrs. Christina traveled to Amherst, Massachusetts for training at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.  While there, we attended two classes entitled "The Whole Book Approach" and "Picturing Stories".  We have been enjoying integrating some of the ideas we learned into the The Art of Reading program.  Mrs. Meghan highly recommends the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art as a destination for a family vacation.  "My boys loved it"!

More About The Program

Last year, among the many encouraging and complimentary words the program received, we heard, "It would be more fun if it was a longer class".  We at SPLAT Studio are listening and are pleased to offer a 1 hour class that includes; story time and art instruction followed by child directed creative inquiry.  We look forward to seeing many familiar faces and welcome newcomers.
